Making Negatives and Questions in the Past Simple
To make negative sentences and questions in the Past Simple, we use the helper did. It is the same for all subjects — I, you, he, she, it, we, and they. The helper 'did' carries the past, so the main verb goes back to its base form.
Structure
- Negative: Subject + did not (didn't) + base form of the verb. Example: They didn't watch the film.
- Question: Did + subject + base form of the verb? Example: Did they watch the film?
- Wh-question: Question word + did + subject + base form of the verb? Example: Where did they go?
How the Grammar Works
- Use did for every subject. There is no special form for 'he', 'she', or 'it'.
